What sealer or varnish can be applied over wallpaper?

Hi all!

I’ve just added this beautiful vintage wallpaper to my kitchen ceiling. It looks great and I want it to last for a very long time. Since we cook a lot I’m worried over time it might stain right above the cooktop. I’m looking for a sealer or varnish that I can paint on over the top of the wallpaper to prevent this. I’ve seen online that people use polyvine decorators varnish for this. This product is not available in australia. I was wondering if there is any sealer that I can buy from Bunnings to put over the top of all my vintage wallpaper to seal it and make it last longer?

Hi @Nonica2605,

I'm sorry, but I am unaware of any sealers designed to coat wallpaper. None of our suppliers have products that list wallpaper as a suitable substrate or have tested their existing products for this purpose. 

Do you have a rangehood in your kitchen? If not, installing one would be an excellent way to reduce airborne grease that could stain the wallpaper.
