What drill bits to buy for beginner?

Hi, I am more or less decided on this brushless kit from Ryobi

https://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-18v-one-hp-brushless-compact-2-piece-kit_p0332987.

What drill bits set should I buy? I am a beginner to DIY and will mostly use it around the house. I foresee some drilling into masonry but not concrete.

Thanks,

Re: What drill bits to buy for beginner?

Hi @PL59,

In order to drill into masonry, you require a hammer drill or specialised bits. That's a great kit you've selected, but the impact driver that it includes is not something that a beginner to DIY would really need. I have one and seldom reach for it unless there's a specific application. A drill driver is capable of doing almost any job around the home. Impact drivers are different from hammer drills and are not designed for masonry. What I would suggest is that you switch to the Ryobi 18V ONE+ HP 4.0Ah Brushless Hammer Drill Kit. This is a drill driver that has a hammer function for those times that you need to drill into masonry.

For drill bit sets, I'd grab something like this Ryobi 95-Piece Specialty Metric Drill and Drive Set , which gives you a good range of bits and drill bits. It doesn't include masonry bits, so you could also pick up the Ryobi 10 - Piece Masonry Drill Bit Set. Or, do as I do and just run down to Bunnings and buy individual masonry bits when you require that specific size.

If you decide to go with the kit you selected, you'll need to use Multi-material bits for the masonry drilling.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: What drill bits to buy for beginner?

Thanks for your reply. For the Hammer Drill you linked, I can easily used that for minor drilling works around the house e.g. interior walls etc?

I saw the compact version - Is it recommended/good value?

Thanks!

Re: What drill bits to buy for beginner?

When not in hammer mode, they act as normal drill drivers @PL59, which is what you'd use for other drilling work around the home and driving screws.

The compact version will also work for you; it's just not brushless and doesn't have as much power when drilling into masonry. It's perfect for everything else, though.
