Should I paint my brick house?

I’m thinking about painting my brick house but I’m not sure if this is a great idea and I’m afraid that it might end up being something I regret.
should I first do a mortar wash? Also is there anyone who has done this and are glad they did, or do you have any helpful advice?

The brick is currently dark brown and textured. The windows are brown aluminium but will be changed to the dark grey and my idea is to have a lovely Tuscan style garden so I want to go with a white shade for the house..

Re: should I paint, or not paint my brick house?

Hello @Kyliz

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about painting your brick house.

Painting the exterior of your brick house can greatly enhance curb appeal by offering a modern, clean look, especially if the brick has an older or uneven appearance. It also provides an additional layer of protection from weather, as high-quality exterior paint can guard against moisture, UV exposure, and other environmental factors that may gradually wear down brick. Painted brick is also easier to clean, as the smooth surface is more resistant to grime and dust. Another major benefit is the ability to customize the colour, allowing you to match or contrast the brick with other features of your home’s exterior.

However, there are some downsides to consider. Painted brick requires maintenance over time; the paint will eventually fade, peel, or chip, requiring regular touch-ups or reapplications, which can become both time-consuming and costly. Also, painting brick reduces its natural breathability, potentially trapping moisture that can lead to mould, mildew, and structural issues if left unchecked. Once painted, brick is difficult and expensive to restore to its natural state, as paint removal can be challenging and typically requires professional assistance. Painted brick may also be prone to efflorescence a white, powdery buildup that appears when trapped moisture draws minerals to the surface, often spoiling the paint finish.

If you choose to paint, the store has some suitable options. For exterior brick, consider Dulux Weathershield in a matte finish. This paint is highly durable and formulated to withstand the elements. Another great choice is Wattyl Solagard Masonry Matt, designed specifically for exterior masonry surfaces and highly resistant to cracking and peeling.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Re: Should I paint my brick house?

Hi @Kyliz,

You might like to share some photos further away from the house so we can see all the house and garden. Might give members a better idea of what you're working with.

Other popular options are cladding and rendering that you might also like to consider.

Welcome to the community. We look forward to seeing how you can make your mark on your home.
