Why do I hear pipe shutter under the house when I turn the outside tap on and off?

Water hammer, also known as pipe shudder, occurs when water flowing through the pipes is suddenly stopped or redirected, causing a pressure surge that results in a loud banging or thudding noise. This often happens when a valve, such as the one on your outside tap, is closed abruptly, causing the moving water to collide with the shut valve and create a shockwave through the pipes. Over time, this can cause wear and tear on the plumbing system. You might like to have a plumber install a water hammer arrestor, which absorbs the shockwave caused by sudden changes in water pressure and can help prevent the sound.

However, there could be other reasons for the noise you're hearing. It might also be due to loose pipes under the house that are not securely fastened. When water is turned on or off, these pipes can move, causing vibrations and the resulting noise. In this case, securing the loose pipes with pipe straps or brackets can help reduce the noise.
