Patio Door Installation

Looking to widen this doorway to fit double patio doors. Do I need to install a steel lintel?  (or any lintel?) if all bricks above door are removed?

Re: Patio Door Installation

Hi @allanskea

Merry XMAS hope your day was great.

I personally would want a steel lintel spanning across the doorways.

It looks like roof rafters are supported by the wall (the join roof strips) So you will need to make sure the job done right a engineer/builder has made sure the doorway supported well during the upgrade and afterwards.

I hope you get what you want sooner not later.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @allanskea. It's tremendous to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about lintel installation.

I completely agree with @Jewelleryrescue’s advice. To determine whether a steel lintel (or any lintel) is necessary, you’d need a structural engineer or building professional to assess the roof structure above the doorway. The image provides some context, but it’s impossible to confirm structural requirements without a detailed inspection.

If the bricks above the door are load-bearing or supporting any part of the structure, a lintel would almost certainly be required to maintain structural integrity. An engineer would evaluate the load above the doorway and recommend the correct type and size of the lintel to ensure safety and compliance with building codes.

Engaging a professional for assessment is essential before moving forward with your project.

Please let us know if you have any questions.
