How to unlock the locked door handle?

1000008943.jpg

the door handle is loose and locked from inside. I removed the face plate but unfortunately the screw heads are on the other side so I don't have access to unscrew it.

Any suggestion on how to unlock it if there is any.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks...

Re: how to unlock the locked door handle?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @samir. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about removing a door handle.

If you take a look under the door handle, is there a small hole which inside of it houses a grub screw that retains the handle on the shaft? If the handle can be removed, then you might be able to unscrew the cover plate and access more screws.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: how to unlock the locked door handle?

Hi Mitchell,

Thanks for your help.

Unfortunately there's no hole in the handle shaft.

There are two screws, circled red, but the head is access on the other side. Is there any other way to unscrew it or would you suggest any other option.

Appretiate your time and help.

Thanks.

Re: how to unlock the locked door handle?

Hello @samir

I'm afraid there are no other screw points you can remove, unless you can somehow use your drill to turn the ends of the screws anticlockwise the only other option that comes to mind is to destroy the door knob. There is the option of getting a locksmith, but you'll be paying a premium for that service. The advantage of course is that you'll be able to re-use the door knob. This is on the condition that the locksmith will not ruin the lock.

Let me call on our experienced members @Dave-1, @Nailbag and @TedBear for their recommendations.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Re: how to unlock the locked door handle?

Hi @samir

I'm assuming this a "privacy door handle" probably for a bathroom or toilet? Then the hole on the side would also be visible with the cover-late on too (see image below). This is a safety release access hole allowing you to push an object through like a nail to push the privacy lock button on the other side back out.

Very rarely I've had to do this when the mechanism must have got bumped and overtime locked itself when the door was closed on exit.

Re: how to unlock the locked door handle?

Good Morning @samir

I am also going with @Nailbag's theory. Is the door a privacy door to the bathroom/toilet? If so there should be a pin/button that you can reset with a nail or small screwdrive as @Nailbag has said. (Yes I have had a child do that to my bathroom and I used a spare nail to "pop" it open)

Hi @samir

Another member here who recommends the above.

Same system as mine. I used a small allen key.
