How to retain stones on a slope?

Hi everyone,

I have installed a French Drain around the outside of the garage ( see pics ) and it works well but now I need to waterproof the joint between the concrete slab and the hardiplank wall. 
 My problem is the blue metal keeps sliding down the slope and up against the wall which I’ve been told by a tiler will be a problem with the waterproofing.

I didn’t want to remove all the soil as if is supporting the fence.

I am hoping someone can suggest a solution to retain the stones and stop them from sliding down.

Great work with the french drain, it's good to see the project progressing well.

Due to the lay of the land, you are always going to run into problems with material falling towards the shed. The only real way to completely stop this from happening is to level the ground so it is below the level of the slab.

With this being said, you could reduce the issue by installing some edging, such as this Rola Pak 200mm x 2.8m Garden Edging along the concrete so that the top of the edging sits around 50mm above the lip of the concrete.

This would certainly help stop the stones from being washed onto the concrete during a downpour.

Thanks for your advice…I was thinking of a small wooden retaining wall …something like in this video but lower…do you think it would be suitable?

Hi @ChrisA,

A simple retaining wall like that in the video would be a great solution.

You could use 200 x 50mm Treated Pine Sleepers alongside Jack 12 x 1800mm Hot Dipped Galvanised Reinforcing cut into 600mm sections with a minimum of 3 per sleeper.

Another method I would suggest is to concrete in Jack 50 x 450mm Joiner Posts and Jack 50 x 450mm End Posts as they will give much more strength than the dowels that have been used in your example video.

Just an amateur's thoughts @ChrisA 

But if you don't want to drill through the 200mm sleeper width for your rods - I have had success with homemade brackets that attach with a square/round tube for the steel rod to pass through like a trocar.

My rods were 16mm diameter with a sharpened end.

But if you drill it - may I recommend/suggest welding a 'hitting cap' to the rod. Less damage to your hammer handle and it provides some clamping pressure to your sleeper.

Just random thoughts.
