How to restore Pine ceiling?

Hi there! We have beautiful pine ceilings we love bar the orange tones!

We have attempted to stain the ceiling darker however it’s turned out incredibly patchy due to pines properties (I assume!)z

So we have sanded the ceiling back ready for another go, though I’m just not confident in what we need to do to get the desired look. I’ll attach photos of our current ceiling in other rooms, our partially sanded back room we stained and our inspo.

At this point, we are exhausted from sanding this back, I’m hoping without painting  there is a solution that doesn’t involve more sanding and isn’t painting. However, concerned with how botched this looks we won’t be able to find something that can even this out. I can’t remember what stain we used for this, it was recommended to us by someone at Bunnings, the brand was feast Watson.

Re: ceiling help

Hi @parisrose,

Do you have any images of how the stained ceiling looked patchy before you sanded it back? That would help identify if it was just an issue with staining pine or if something else might be going on. Pine typically takes stain quite well and shouldn't end up blotchy. It might be a bit uneven, but most wouldn't pick up on this or call the effect patchy. It sounds more like there was some type of coating on the boards that might not have been fully sanded off and the stain hasn't been able to penetrate through it. The only way to resolve this would be to fully sand the boards back to raw timber.

If you've done as much sanding as possible, I would proceed with caution and stain one board at a time and do a test section to ensure this patchiness doesn't occur again.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell
