Re: How to replace downlight?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Griffy. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about replacing a downlight.

To replace the bulb in your downlight, the first thing to check is whether the globe (bulb) can be removed from the housing. In many cases, there is a locking ring in front of the bulb that needs to be turned a quarter turn anti-clockwise to release it. Once the ring is loosened, the bulb should simply drop out, and you can replace it with a new one. This can be done without removing the light fixture from the ceiling.

However, if your downlight is a more recent model (within the last 10 years), it’s could be an LED light that is a sealed unit. In this case, the entire lighting fixture (the downlight housing) needs to be replaced rather than just the bulb itself.

It’s also important to note that your downlight is connected to a 12V transformer, and the wiring you’ve pulled out from the ceiling is 240V. If you’re unfamiliar with working with electrical fixtures, particularly when it comes to replacing a 12V downlight fixture, I would highly recommend enlisting the services of a qualified electrician. They can ensure the job is done safely and to code, especially if you need to replace the transformer or make adjustments to the electrical connections.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
