How to remove slate flooring?

Hello Fellow DIYers!

I am in the process of renovating my home and I wish to remove my slate floors.

I read the following posts from @Kelli-H and @FrankA with guidance from @EricL

As I am keen to complete this job myself, any experiences you can share would be greatly appreciated.

I have attempted to remove the slate using the Ozito tool (as pictured) but it's just not strong enough and given its size, it is back breaking! I am prepared to hire or purchase the necessary equipment to complete this removal.

@EricL did mention the opportunity of hiring a slate breaking machine. Eric, I have approx 10 - 15m/2 of salte to remove and concrete grinding. Which tools would you recommend?

Additionally, I am removing the pantry and wall oven walls, and the entire kitchen. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys :smile:20241022_072539.jpg20241022_072550.jpg20241022_072604.jpg20241022_072609.jpg20241022_072517.jpg20241022_072530.jpg

Re: How to remove slate flooring?

Hello @George_P68

Thanks for sharing your question about removing your slate tiles. I propose hiring out the Coates Large Breaker, this electric breaker is capable of performing the toughest tasks. Almost any demolition job can be completed using the chisel, point and spade attachments. Please note because of its power, I recommend using the spade attachment only as it might go straight into your concrete foundation which is not ideal. Please test its function so that you can guide the tool to remove the slate tiles only. Using excessive force could damage your concrete foundation.

One other option is to break the slate tiles from the top using a Craftright 3.6KG Sledgehammer which you can then follow up with the electric tile break tools. Please make sure to wear personal protection such as appropriate clothing, gloves, goggles and a mask.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Thanks for yuor quick reply @EricL

Once I remove the slate, I will more than likely need to grind/smooth the concrete.

Can you please recommend a grinder and grinding blade for the job ?

Re: How to remove slate flooring?

Hi @George_P68

To level off the concrete floor, I suggest hiring the Coates Floor Grinder. Please note that this device will generate an immense amount of concrete dust, I propose isolating rooms and the work area using Monarch 2.6 x 3.6m Blue Plastic Drop Sheet in combination with masking tape. By creating a temporary plastic barrier between rooms, it will halt the spread of concrete dust in your house.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.
