How to paint bare metal door frames?

We need to paint bare metal door frames. All original paint has been removed back to metal. We tried using Dulux Maximum adhesion undercoat but it comes off

What would be the best primer to use on the bare metal thanks

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Gavin63. It's brilliant to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about painting a door frame.

It would be good to get some more details on how the primer is coming off. Dulux Maximum Adhesion Undercoat is designed tough-to-paint surfaces, so it should be adhering well. Are you seeing peeling, flaking, or an issue with adhesion when applying the topcoat?

If you're looking for an alternative, you could try White Knight Rust Guard Medium Grey Metal Primer, which is specifically formulated for bare metal. You can then follow it up with White Knight Rust Guard Gloss White Epoxy Enamel Paint as the topcoat for a durable finish.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: Bare metal door frames

Hi there thanks for getting back

It is like the paint just isn't bonding to the metal and you can even just scratch it off with your fingernail.

I washed all frames down with a sugarsoap and water sponge then fresh water prior to painting

I am also spraying

Re: Bare metal door frames

Hi @Gavin63,

I've had a chat with Dulux Technical, and although Max Adhesion can be applied on metal, it's not specifically designed for it. They recommend that you switch to the Dulux Precision 1L All Metal Primer, which is far superior on metal surfaces.

I'd suggest returning the current can to the store of purchase with your proof of purchase and discussing with our team about exchanging it for the All Metal Primer that Dulux has specified. If you can let me know the store of purchase and when you might be able to attend, I can call ahead to ensure it is swapped over for you rather than having to purchase the new product.

Re: Bare metal door frames

Thanks for that but we have already used about a 1/3rd to 1/2 of the 4ltr is that ok to return.

We will now also have to remove that paint I assume so it wont scratch off easily

I will ask my daughter where she bought it and if she still has the receipt

Re: Bare metal door frames

If you can let me know the store of purchase, I'd be happy to contact them and discuss the return @Gavin63

Unfortunately, yes, it would be best to remove the paint.
