How to fix front door wood frame?

Hi - apologies if this is stupid - but can anyone tell me how to fix the bit of wood in my front doorway, where the security screen latches in to? A small section that had a crack already has come off, as per the photo below. Would wood filler sort this sort of thing? Or best to glue the old part back on and then wood filler around that?

(It’s getting painted next week so no issue regarding matching colours etc.).

Please help this DIY newbie!

Re: How to fix front door wood frame?

Hello @Lou_L

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's fabulous to have you join us, and thank you for sharing your question about fixing your front door wood frame.

It's perfectly alright to ask these questions, but before we begin, I believe that your security door is the first thing we need to address before you begin repairing your wood frame. For some reason, your security door is catching on to this part of the frame and is damaging it.

Repairing your door frame now will only result in the same thing happening. Would it be possible for you to post a photo of your security door both in its open and closed state? Can you please also include a photo of the hinges of the security door? Oftentimes, when the security door is off centre odds are one of the hinges has come loose, which causes the door to gouge into the timber door frame.

A balanced security door means that it fits neatly into the door frame without hitting or scratching its finish.

We look forward to seeing the photos of your security door.

Eric

Re: How to fix front door wood frame?

Thank you for this - I apologise I didn’t include all the details previously.

the security door doesn’t catch in it - this is the result of the door being slammed in anger and the still door side (which has the latch in it) was pushed out with the slam, breaking through the bit that has come off. The doors swing freely without catching on anything.

Re: How to fix front door wood frame?

Hi @Lou_L

Thank you for that extra information about your door. If you still have the timber piece that broke off, this is the perfect opportunity for you to go to the store and get a colour match. Simply bring the timber piece to the paint counter and ask the paint specialist to match the colour that's on the timber piece. I recommend asking for a simple pot as you'll only be painting that small area.

While you are at the store, I suggest grabbing a tube of Selleys 100g Liquid Nails Construction Adhesive. You'll need to use this to glue the timber piece back on. However, the other method of repair is using Poly 450g Exterior Timber Filler. You'll need to build up the missing piece until it is at the same level as your frame.

Once the filler has cured, you'll then need to sand it down to the same level of the frame before you paint it over. I leave the choice up to you on which repair method you want to use. I suggest having a look at this discussion - How to fill the holes and gouge in my door? by @vica.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.
