Hi, We had a plumbing leak and are now left with a hole in the ceiling. The area is around 31cm x 33cm measured as a rectangle to the
coving. I have only patched small wall holes before so any help would be much appreciated! Thank you.
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Faye10. It's tremendous to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about repairing a hole in plasterboard.
To fix the hole in your ceiling, the first step is to neaten up the damaged area by cutting it into a clean square or rectangle. This makes it easier to fit a new piece of plasterboard securely. Measure the dimensions of the cut-out area and transfer these measurements onto a plaster repair sheet, then cut the sheet to size.
Next, you’ll need to install some timber battens around the edges of the hole, securing them to the existing ceiling joists. These battens will act as a support frame, giving you something solid to screw the new plasterboard into. Make sure the battens extend a few centimetres beyond the hole’s edges so the repair sheet has plenty of support.
Once your new piece of plasterboard is cut to size, fit it into the hole and screw it into the battens so it sits flush with the rest of the ceiling. Apply plaster tape over the seams where the new sheet meets the existing ceiling to prevent cracks from forming later. Cover the taped joints with a topping compound, feathering out the edges to blend smoothly with the surrounding ceiling. After the compound dries, sand it back to a smooth finish, then you’re ready to prime and paint the area to match the rest of the ceiling.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
