How to finish step down between rooms?

I'm trying to do the finishings for this step down from the kitchen to the laundry. I originally thought a block of wood and then some rubber overlay but wanted to check other options.

Re: Finish this step nicely

Hello @ashr97

For finishing this step down from the kitchen to the laundry, you have a few options depending on the look and durability you want. If you’re after a simple and sturdy solution, a timber stair nosing from Bunnings could be a great fit. You can stain or paint it to match your flooring, and it provides a clean edge while protecting the step. If you prefer something with a bit more grip, aluminium stair nosing with a non-slip strip is a good choice, especially in a laundry where things might get wet.

If you're still considering a rubber overlay, you could pair it with a bullnose trim for a softer transition. Another option is a custom timber tread cut to size, which would give a seamless look between the two floors. For a modern finish, you could also install a tile trim or vinyl edge strip if you want to keep it minimal.

Let me call on our experienced members @Dave-1 and @Nailbag for their recommendations.

Morning @ashr97

Mmmm I will give a few ideas as they kind of all ran through my mind at once

-Solid lump of timber cut to fit and sealed to fit into that whole gap. It will give a nice edge to the doorway. So a square step type deal.

-Tiled up to the timber and then either a timber riser or tiled riser to suit your flooring with a cap such as @EricL has suggested.

-Timber floorboard placed between the two and also used as the riser section with a Nose over the top. This is another one that I like.

My preference is the first  But its pretty much just an opionion. It will haveto match the tiled area and the laminated area, plus be long lasting.

Re: How to finish step down between rooms?

Hi @ashr97

Anything you do to fill that space needs to match the height of the lower floor. Hers are two suggestions, with the first my preference.

1. Fill with matching tiles, then with a floorboard on the riser with a matching bull-nosed trim along the step edge.

2. Fill with matching floorboard as well as the riser the riser with a matching bull-nosed trim along the step edge.
