How to connect home appliances to a generator with 15amp plugs?

Hi team,

I am considering buying a generator to power the fridge and the odd device during a blackout.

I was looking at this one from Ryobi.

https://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-4000w-petrol-open-frame-inverter_p0320386

It has 3 x 15amp outlets. How would I connect 10amp cords? Do I need an adaptor? The only adapters I can find are for caravans etc. which goes the other way.

Thanks,

John

Re: How to connect home appliances to a generator with 15amp plugs?

Hi @DIYJT11,

Thank you for your question.

Have a look at the discussion Solved: Can you plug a 10 Amp device into a 15 Amp socket where this topic was discussed at length.

My understanding is that a 10-amp plug can physically go into a 15-amp socket; however, the opposite is not possible as a 15-amp plug has a much larger earth pin which won't fit in the 10-amp socket.

As 10-amp appliances that are not malfunctioning, will only draw up to 10-amps and the 15-amp socket will supply more than this amperage, then you won't have any issues.

Allow me to tag our experienced member @CSParnell, who is an electrician, to confirm.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Re: How to connect home appliances to a generator with 15amp plugs?

No, it is not illegal to plug a 10A plug into a 15A outlet in Australia. AS/NZS 3000:2018 (Wiring Rules) does not prohibit this because a 15A outlet can safely supply 10A-rated equipment without issue.

You can't plug a 15amp into a 10amp circuit physically or without a stepdown protected device
