We are painting over our 1990s timber architraves, window frames, etc. we are using Zinsser Coverstain and then painting with Dulux Aquanamel semi gloss in Vivid White.
My question is do we paint 2x with the Zissner or 2x with the Dulux? Or neither?
Thank you.
Hello @Yolande
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's fabulous to have you join us, and thank you for sharing your question about painting over sealed timber.
The Zinsser 1L CoverStain Primer Sealer Stain Blocker is an excellent primer that's used on formerly stained timber. It prevents the paint phenomenon called bleeding. If you were to use ordinary primer on a stained surface, the stain will sometimes climb up through the primer and become visible as a patch. Even after you've painted over the area, the patch is still visible.
On the condition that you've sanded the door frame, apply a single coat of Zinsser. Once the primer has totally cured, you can then apply the Dulux Aquanamel. Please make sure to follow the recommended drying time before applying the second coat.
Please keep us updated with your progress, we look forward to seeing your timber frames revamped.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.
