How do I fill in these gaps on the exterior of my house?

How do I fill in these gaps on the exterior of my house?

On the outside of my house there are gaps in the brick mortar where overtime the mortar has disintegrated. I’m told that this was a specific problem to my local area where back when the house was built the mortar wasn't up to standard and erodes over time. Around the front of my windows there are large sections which have eroded. Is there a way that I can sort this out myself?

We also have a large ant issue - I’m not sure if it’s to do with the extra access points that they have.

Re: How do I fill in these gaps on the exterior of my house?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Kjenky. It's fantastic to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about repairing mortar.

You can fill the missing sections of the mortar by re-pointing the affected areas. This process involves scraping out any loose or disintegrated mortar and filling the voids with new mortar. You’ll need a pointing trowel to apply the new mortar, and a jointing tool to smooth and shape it. Once done, allow the mortar to cure and dry properly.

This will not only close up the gaps but also prevent further erosion, providing a more durable barrier to the elements. As for the ants, they could be using those gaps as entry points, so sealing them up should help reduce the access they have to your home.

Additionally, you might want to consider treating the area around your home with an insect spray to help with the current issue.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
