One of the window frames facing the sun is cracked. Can I replace the damaged part with new timber, secure it with nails or glue on the inside, sand it, and repaint it? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!
Hi @timmyg,
It looks like the bottom sill of your window frame might be compromised. You’re on the right track with replacing the damaged part with new timber, but first, it's important to assess whether the timber behind the frame, especially near the window, also needs replacement. To do this, test the timber by gently pressing or scraping it. If it feels spongy or chips away easily, it likely needs to be replaced. If the timber is still solid, you can simply sand away any decayed areas and recoat it with paint to seal it and prevent further damage.
For the cracked trim on the outside, it’s usually best to remove the damaged section and replace it with a new piece that matches the original profile. You can glue and screw the new trim into place for a secure fit. This will help restore the structural integrity of the window frame and ensure a clean, finished look.
If the window frame itself needs further repairs, especially with any structural timber behind it, you may want to consider professional help, particularly if it involves removing the window.
