Help with plaster

Hi all,

First post here. I have two questions regarding walls and player in the home.

1. What is the stripe for shown in one of the photos? The house is a 1986 transportable house. It’s not very thick so I can’t see it being used as conduit. Does it have a purpose? Can it be safely removed? I don’t look like the look of them.

2. In the other photo is a section of the wall above the door frame in a corner that has really thick plaster. I was wondering if that was just someone’s attempt at repairing cracks before selling the house or not. What would be the best way to fix it up?

@WheresWally  Hollow walls on a timber frame are not a good indication it is gyprock (plasterboard). Asbestos sheeting was also fixed on timber frames. It's just good safe practice to know what you are working with before attempting any alterations, for health sake and peace of mind.

The strip cover is usually used to conceal the joints between the sheets of fiber. Chances are both the sheets and strips contain asbestos. My advice is not to touch it at all...gap it up near and repaint. As for the second picture I would dig that old plaster out and replanted. Much quicker than sanding. Grab yourself some basecoat and small tub top coat.

@tony-treehouse It may seem counter-intuitive to advise that one wall is asbestos and not to touch, then advise to dig out the "gyprock" on the other pictured wall. Would you not agree it would be best practice to assume both are asbestos?
