This is a simple floating desk to fill the void created when we did the bathroom renovations.
It sits a little too high for my liking but we'll rectify that with a bar stool. The height was kind of dictated to us because of the fibre cable installation.
Materials
Tools
Drop saw
Scroll / Jig saw
Drill press
Rail saw
Steps
Step 1
1/3I cut the 20 x 45mm timber to 500mm for the side rails then whatever the resulting length was for the rear support.
I had to cut out part of the right support to make way for the fibre cable installation. Why installers feel the need to install fibre cable halfway down the wall is beyond me, it makes for such a hassle.
I nailed everything to the vertical framing in the walls for the best load.
Step 2
2/3Getting the right dimensions for the desk top was a little finicky. I cut more than was needed and worked down.
My measurements showed everything to be reasonably square but this was not the case. The back is 2mm narrower than the front but it's not really noticable.
Step 3
3/3Because Bunnings in New Plymouth is so small, I couldn't find monitor brackets so I had to go to Mitre10 for that.
I also picked up a 60mm cable hole cover so that I could make things a little tidier on the desk.
I need to make some form of cable tidy under the desk to tidy up underneath.
My plan was for two monitors but I can't physically fit two monitors in the space so the other monitor and bracket will go in my workshop once we get our new Mac Mini. This will allow me to use the Mac Mini for creating plans in Fusion 360 and then use the old MacBook Air in the workshop to show me the plans.

Re: Floating Office Desk
Hi @woodenwookie,
Nice work with the floating desk.
It looks nice and sturdy and makes great use of an otherwise troublesome location.
Thank you for sharing.

Re: Floating office desk
Great idea, @woodenwookie , and neat cutaway job
Would you consider doing a floating shelf or two above it? That could be cool.

Re: Floating office desk
I did think about that. That way I could run the WiFi up and store HDDs etc off the desk.
Running it up the flagpole to the boss (ie. Mrs Wookie) can be a tricky thing though. 😂

Re: Floating office desk
It would be inappropriate to display anything but. 😉
