Dining table

Dining table

Hi,

I wanted to check if I get pine timber panel 2400x900x33 to be used as a dining table combined with steel tube legs ,similar to the ones in the link below, would I still need any braces or supports underneath the panel or it's thick enough to support itself?

Re: Dining table

Hi @Medhat,

A warm welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community and thank you for your question.

Have a look at the advice I've given in How to build a dining table using Specrite panels?

As the Specrite 2400 x 900 x 33mm Timber Multi Use Pine Panel is 33mm thick, I am fairly confident it will be sturdy enough if the legs are located 300mm in from each end, but you can always add some bracing afterwards if there is any sag or bounce.

This Porta 42 x 42mm 1.2m DAR Square General Purpose Pine would be a good option for bracing that will match your timber panel if you need it.

Let me know what you think.

Re: Dining table

No worries @Medhat.

If you have any questions along the way, don't hesitate to reach out and remember to upload some photos once you're done. It would be fantastic to see your table once it is complete.

Re: Dining table

Hi @JacobZ

I did the table and the bench, but didn't do the frame below as it didn't seem to buckle and the bench I added a support in the middle.

The issue that I've in both the table and the bench is that it wobbles, as if it needs bracing. Is  there a solution to this problem?

Re: Dining table

Good evening @Medhat

It certainly looks very nice!

What screws did you use?

I have seen one thread where they connected two wooden beams at the centre of the "X" for stability.

The video that accompanies that link above also mentions "coming in further" from the edges with long pieces, remembering yours is also 34 kg.

But instability does seem to be a common problem.

Not the same situation but a similar problem - a large bench seat.

Despite vigorous bolt and nut tension - it continued to rock slightly - side to side.

The 'cure' was two steel plates welded at the ends.

Just a second glass of wine thought.

Cheers!

Re: Dining table

Hello @Medhat

When you say wobble, are you referring to the entire table itself or the legs being uneven and sort of tilts off balance because of the bottom not being even. It is a very heavy benchtop that you are using and could be the cause of the movement. The middle support leg might need to be installed out of line to provide a counterbalance to the linear installation of the table legs.

Re: Dining table

Side to side wobble, the reply above is more inline of my thoughts to add a beam to connect the legs at the X intersection, but don't have a thought of how to do it cleanly : (

Re: Dining table

Hi @Medhat

I was thinking more of a third leg installed offset so that the wobble is eliminated. I've placed a sample image below to give you an idea of how it can be done.
