Furniture can help make your outdoor entertaining area more inviting, comfortable and stylish.

Bunnings merchandise trend and design manager Jane Wright says trends in outdoor furniture include sustainable materials, weather-resistant fabrics and built-in storage.

Check out Jane's top trends to consider when shopping for new outdoor furniture this summer.

1. Multi-purpose storage solutions

Many people are embracing the concept of adding storage to their outdoor areas using furniture.

"A storage box can serve as both a bench seat and a makeshift table, perfect for stowing away outdoor cushions, foldable chairs or gardening essentials," Jane says. "This multi-purpose approach helps keeps your space tidy and organised."

Bunnings Workshop member Tony (@tony1982) embraced this trend with his gabion bench seat with built-in firewood storage.

2. Diverse materials

Outdoor furniture options have evolved says Jane, and now include designer dining settings and weather-resistant sofas. "Choose materials that align with your desired aesthetic," Jane advises.

Trends include sleek and modern looks with powder-coated steel and aluminium. You can also opt for a relaxed coastal vibe using natural timbers or woven materials. "Durable hardwoods like Teak and Merbau are excellent choices, while resin wicker offers greater durability than natural wicker for woven furniture," she adds.

A good example of a coastal aesthetic is Workshop member (@LaCasaDIY)'s Mediterranean-inspired outdoor renovation, which paired an all-white palette with wooden and textured elements.

3. Sustainable, quality furniture

Jane encourages people to prioritise high-quality furniture when choosing key items like outdoor sofas and dining tables.

Investing in quality can ensure longer lifespan and reduce the amount of unwanted furniture ending in landfill. The Bunnings guide How to choose the right outdoor seating contains more advice.

4. Weather-resistant fabrics

Jane also recommends considering how exposed your outdoor furniture will be to the elements.

When choosing cushions and fabrics, she recommends opting for pieces that are water-resistant and designed to withstand your local climate.

Can any one tell me where I can get the squabs for my outdoor couch recovered. The frame is still in good condition & so are the squab interiors.

Hello @Cackles

Thanks for sharing your question about getting replacements squabs for your outdoor couch. Would it be possible for you to post a picture of your squabs and their measurements. Once you provide me with that information, I'll be able to check if there are any compatible sets at the store.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Hi Eric,

The outdoor couch seat is 1615mmL x 700mmW x 100mmD.
The 3 back cushions are 540mmL x 290mmH x 130mmD at the bottom & 85mmD at the top - although I'd settle for one back cushion.

I'd really appreciate it if you have anything compatible.

Hi @Cackles

Thanks for that extra information about your outdoor sofa. I'm passing by the store tomorrow and will have a look and see if anything will fit your measurements. I'll get back to you as soon as I have more information.

So sorry for the delay in our reply, @Cackles.

You can view our entire range of available cushions on the Bunnings Website. Our bench cushions' max length is 1160mm, so that's not wide enough for your couch and they're too narrow.

I am unaware of any backrest cushions that are tapered. We only stock throw-type cushions.

If only the material has failed on your cushions, you might consider having them professionally reupholstered.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell

Hello @Cackles

Thank you so much for your patience. I'm sorry but none of the cushions at the store are close to the measurements you've posted. Although it is technically possible to use the square chair cushions in combination such as the MOJO Weathertex Outdoor Square Chair Cushion. It is not deep enough to cover the frame of your outdoor sofa.

On the other hand, this would of course make a fantastic D.I.Y. project as you can choose your favourite fabric and possibly recycle the foam inserts. But if you are pressed for time, I recommend having it reupholstered by a local trade person in your area.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.
