Updating your home’s exterior helps make a great first impression, especially if you are looking to sell your home.

There's many ways to improve your home's street appeal, including many inexpensive and relatively simple projects that can have a big impact.

Get inspiration from the following examples from clever and creative Bunnings Workshop community members who have improved their homes.

1. Give your front garden a makeover

Bunnings Workshop community member Kirsty (@EleventhCoastal) created a low-maintenance front garden using Oxy-Shield steel garden edging and Lytworx garden lighting. Meanwhile, a garden bed with fragrant hedge enlivened Sue's (@suequarford) house and added privacy. For more creative ideas, check out our Top 10 most popular garden makeovers

Experienced horticulturalist Adam has shared comprehensive guides How to plan a garden makeoverHow to give your garden a makeover and How to choose a hedging plant.

2. Paint the exterior

Workshop member @Dinny dramatically transformed the front facade of their tired 1950s house by painting the weatherboards, windows, door, downpipes and balcony. Brick home owners can also choose to paint, like the Bunnings Make It Happen team in their budget makeover of a home back in 2021.

Experienced Bunnings Workshop contributor Rob (@Peggers) has put together a step-by-step guide How to paint like a professional.

3. Update the front porch or add a deck

Resurfacing Pebblecrete in slate grey completely changed the look of member @JRRed’s front porch. Experienced renovator Claire (@Renowayoflife) also completed a dramatic front porch makeover. Meanwhile, Workshop member @jaga built a Spotted Gum deck outside their front door for a safer, more accessible entry and a place to enjoy the view.

Our guide How to build a deck contains step-by-step instructions for your project.

4. Render or clad

When renovating a typical 1980s suburban Australian home, the Bunnings Make It Happen team decided to clad the exterior, as did Bunnings Workshop member Donna (@Dons-Glenno) with weatherboard cladding over a brick veneer home. Meanwhile, experienced renovator @Nailbag chose to render his brick home in a dramatic transformation complete with new formal front entrance

The Bunnings team has a comprehensive step-by-step guide How to render to help ensure a great result.

5. Build a fence

Experienced community member @DIY4Knuckleheds built a front fence with vertical Ironbark battens, while member @Rodney used Merbau decking boards and Whites Screen Up posts to build a D.I.Y fence in their front yard. Don't miss our Top 10 most popular fence projects for more creative ideas.

6. Update the pillars

Wanting to give their front facade a new look, community member @DKG opted for Merbau boards of varying lengths to transform dated brick pillars. Fellow member @emmajames also transformed her patio with striking Hamptons-style verandah posts.

Community member @LaCasaDIY built an arbor for a grand entrance and to keep the harsh western sun out in a Mediterranean-inspired front yard renovation.

7. Replace the front door

A new door and mirror-tinted sidelight gave a tired entryway a contemporary look in @homeinmelbourne's front door and sidelight makeover

while @Nailbag utilised a 1100mm solid timber door preinstalled to a jamb with side glazing in his formal entrance project.

A low-cost alternative to replacing the door is to give it a makeover, like @Nham with his front door paint refresh project.

8. Add stairs or paving

Experienced community member @Jimi used crazy paving in his front landscaping project, while Stacey (@stacey_elise01) created a statement staircase leading to the front of her home by using tiered decking.

9. Add a house number sign or letterbox

Community member @sper used Tasmanian Oak mouldings to build a striking house number sign with a faux plant, while @Rolando built a rustic letterbox by attaching a metal unit to railway sleepers.

The guide How to create concrete house numbers has step-by-step instructions for creating a unique feature for your home.

A storage box is a great way to hide unsightly bins from spoiling your home’s front facade, like @ponting72's stylish bin storage solution. For more clever screening ideas, check out our Top 10 most popular screening projects.

Having an Impact

Some great tips! Thanks for sharing @Jason I can't wait to do more to improve my homes street appeal.

Another cost effective way to refresh a brick home is to lime wash the bricks as I did in this project, its much cheaper than paint 😊
