A modern kitchen is not just a place to cook, it’s a place where friends and family can enjoy time together.

Given that we spend so much time in the kitchen, it’s important to create a space that’s easy to maintain – is organised, easy to clean and free of clutter.

Simplify your routine with these effective tips for creating an easy-to-maintain kitchen.

1. Choose durable countertops

Select materials like granite or laminate that resist stains and scratches, making them easy to clean and maintain and a great feature of your kitchen for years to come.

For help on choosing the right benchtop for your kitchen and budget, check out the  Bunnings guide to kitchen benchtop materials.

2. Install an easy-clean splashback

Use materials like glass or ceramic tiles for your splashback. They are easy to wipe down and resistant to stains.

Cleaning is a breeze for experienced Bunnings Workshop member Rufaro (@diy_hausdesigns) after installing a tiled splashback as part of his cosmetic kitchen makeover.

3. Choose stainless steel appliances

Stainless steel appliances are not only durable but also easy to clean. Fingerprint-resistant finishes can further reduce maintenance.

Community member @Lucille selected stainless steel appliances which perfectly suited their heritage-style kitchen makeover.

4. Incorporate open shelving

Open shelves can be easier to access and clean compared to cabinets with doors. Just ensure you regularly declutter to keep them looking tidy.

Workshop member @Danny2 used timber panels and rope for his open kitchen shelving project.

5. Choose a single bowl sink

A single bowl sink is easy to clean and provides plenty of space for washing large pots and pans.

The farmhouse kitchen renovation by Workshop member @cupofchloe was enhanced by a large single bowl sink.

Get help for your project with the Bunnings guide How to choose the right sink for your kitchen.

6. Install a pull-out sink tap

A pull-out tap makes it easier to clean all areas of the sink and fill pots, reducing the mess.

Get expert advice from the guide How to choose the right tap for your kitchen.

7. Choose matte finishes

Glossy surfaces show fingerprints and smudges more easily. Matte finish handles can help minimise the problems.

Check out the step-by-step guide How to put new handles on kitchen cabinets for assistance with upgrading your kitchen.

8. Install low-maintenance flooring

Hybrid vinyl or tile flooring is durable, water-resistant, and easy to clean, making it ideal for kitchens.

Community member @Danielle383 tiled the floor as part of her budget kitchen renovation using Kaboodle cabinets.

For advice on selecting the best product for your needs, the Bunnings team has created a guide How to choose the right type of flooring.

9. Plan for smart storage

Use drawer dividers, lazy Susans and pull-out shelves to keep your kitchen organised and reduce the time spent looking for ingredients, utensils or the perfect bowl.

Experienced Bunnings Workshop member @DIYology's slimline pull-out spice rack has inspired many community members to utilise wasted space in their kitchen.

10. Install additional lighting

Under-cabinet lighting not only brightens your workspace but also makes it easier to spot and clean grime and spills.

Check out how community member @shaunbteam added lighting in his kitchen pantry renovation with custom cabinets project.
