quick way to get rid of pencil marks on wood

Worked on making a deck and marked straight lines for every screw hole on each board. (Roughly 600 pencil marks)

Now I regret that as the pencil marks don't come off as easily as I thought. I have to sand them off which is taking elbow grease and time

I want to be able to wash it off or wipe it with something

I've tried acetone, alcohol and jif but all take as much time and effort and sanding

Want the wood nice before I oil it with deck oil

It's pine timber

Hi @PatDIY_Dad

A light sand with a 500gt paper on a electric  sander will make the lightest work of there removal.

Next time consider using a tape line or a string line and  dont worry we all being there.

Sand  with the grain  to avoid adding  sander marks next.

Man why didn't I just think of that and use string

Re: quick way to get rid of pencil marks on wood

I've done that before @PatDIY_Dad.

I'm not sure if it would work at all, as graphite is quite hard to remove, but you could try using Deck Clean and a stiff bristle scrubbing brush. That could potentially work.

Let me tag @Nailbag and @Dave-1 to see if they have any thoughts.

Hi @PatDIY_Dad

Before trying the other great suggestions by @MitchellMc and @Jewelleryrescue give a go wiping them away with Isopropyl Alcohol sprayed on to a clean rag.  Keep using different clean areas of the rag as you go.

In the photo, the bottom line was made with a heavier handed builders pencil, the one above with a medium weight 2B lead pencil on spotted gum. You should the get the same result on your pine boards. This should work on any marks not too deeply penciled, which would then require light sanding.

Afternoon @PatDIY_Dad

I am afraid that a light sanding is all that I have on my list. Afterthought is always easy but when you are doing something for the first time, we all do the same thing

Just some light sanding with a cork block and high count sandpaper. 😕 to the effort but it will get done
