building an enclosure on patio.

How would I go about building a cat enclosure. I have been quoted $1800 for this and I'm not sure if it will be worth it or I can do it my self for half the cost.

Would love to know how to go about this project! In the photo they use cat nets but it may be more secure to get screens instead.

Thankyou

Re: building an enclosure on patio.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @av929. It's fantastic to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about building a cat enclosure.

Based on the image you've shown, it looks like the professional-grade enclosure is built with a steel frame, proper cat netting, and a secure door, which would provide excellent durability and safety for your cat. If the quoted price of $1800 includes both the materials and installation, it seems like a reasonable deal, considering the expertise involved in building such a sturdy and secure structure.

However, if you're looking to save costs, building the enclosure yourself could definitely be a more affordable option. The key challenge here is that if you don’t have metal fabricating and welding skills, you would need to use timber to build the frame, which could be easier to work with and more cost-effective than steel. You could use mesh panels instead of the specialised cat netting to keep your cat safely enclosed, but make sure to choose a strong, durable material that can withstand the wear and tear from both the weather and your cat’s movements. Something like these mesh panels would suit.

When designing the frame, it’s important to consider the size of the mesh panels you plan to use and make sure your frame can accommodate them properly. The frame should be sturdy enough to support the weight of the mesh and ensure there are no gaps or weak points where your cat could escape or get caught. Additionally, you’ll need to design a door that’s easy for you to use, but secure enough that your cat can’t push it open.

While you can definitely save money by going the D.I.Y. route, be sure to account for the time, tools, and materials you’ll need. If you don’t have the right tools, it could add to the overall cost and time of the project. If you're up for the challenge and have the right skills, it could be a fun and rewarding project to build yourself.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
