I want to apply a maintenance coat of oil to our deck. Unfortunately I don't know what oil our installers used. I think it is water based as I have tried the spirits test but not sure. Does it matter if I don't use the exact brand?
Deck is Spotted Gum
Hello @AndrewSl
Applying a maintenance coat to your Spotted Gum deck is a great way to keep it looking fresh and protected. Since you're unsure of the original oil used, it's a good idea to start by sanding the deck back to the timber to ensure a clean, even surface. This removes any old oil, dirt, or debris, and helps the new product adhere better.
You don't necessarily need to use the exact brand of oil that was previously applied. However, it’s important to ensure compatibility. Since you believe the original oil might be water-based, it's best to stick with a water-based oil to avoid any issues with adhesion. Bunnings offers several high-quality options for water-based decking oils suitable for Spotted Gum, such as Intergrain UltraDeck or Cabot’s Aquadeck. These products are designed to penetrate the timber and provide long-lasting protection while enhancing the natural beauty of the wood.
Before applying the new oil, give the deck a thorough clean with a decking cleaner to remove any residual grime and to prepare the surface. Once the deck is dry and clean, you can apply the new oil following the manufacturer's instructions. This will help ensure your deck stays in top condition and is well-protected against the elements.
