I’ve cleared vines and weeds from my backyard and don’t want them to grow back but have a dog and a child so need a weed killer that’s pet safe and child safe. Recommendations?
Hi @Peachyspeechie,
Thank you for your question.
The most effective nonselective weed killers are usually glyphosate-based. Unfortunately, glyphosate-based weedkillers are not recommended for use around pets and children.
Seasol EarthCare Organic Weedkiller is an alternative that is less harmful than glyphosate-based weed killers, but it stipulates that you must keep children and pets out of the area until it is dry so that it won't transfer onto their hands and paws and then into their mouths. It works by dehydrating the leaves and weeds instead of poisoning them with glyphosate. The worst-case scenario with the Seasol product is that your pet might have a bit of an upset stomach if they eat heaps of grass with it on it.
Alternatively, manual removal is safe for all our loved ones. You could use a Cyclone Extract Weeder to make manual removal easier as weeds return.
You might also like to have a read through How to remove weeds without harming your pets, which gives a number of solutions to your question.
Let me know what you think.
