Hi there, I am planning to build a DIY modular deck with a similar, but slightly different, design to the Good Times Modular decking you sell at Bunnings Australia (I'm in NZ). I'm not sure if I should be using batten screws to put together the framing, or if nails will be fine. If nails will work, what length nails are best? Will galvanised screws or nails work okay with H3.2 treated pine or is stainless best? I am in exposure zone C so not really close to the coast. Thanks!
Hi @Caitlin_,
Thank you for your question about what fixings to use to build a deck.
Deck frames will use screws as opposed to nails. This is because screws grip the frame's timber more effectively due to their threaded design, ensuring connections stay tight and secure under the weight and stress of the deck. Screws are less likely to work loose over time compared to nails, which is critical for maintaining the frame's strength and preventing movement that could compromise the deck's stability.
The specific screws you use will be relative to the specific timber and layout of the deck and whether you are using hardware such as joist hangers. If you can provide some more details about the size and layout of the deck, I'd be happy to offer further guidance.
Unless you are very close to water, galvanised fixings will be fine.
