Shade sail

Hi there

What rectangular sized shade sail would you need for a 6 x 3 pergola?

Cheers

Re: Shade sail

Hi @suset,

A warm welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community and thank you for your question.

Can you advise where specifically you are looking to install the shade sail?

Is it between the posts at the front of your image where there is currently a roller blind?

Or is it over the top of the existing structure to shade the pergola?

Unfortunately, the largest size available in our range of rectangular shade sails is 5x3m. If this could work for your purposes, then the Coolaroo 5 x 3m Rectangle Graphite Commercial Grade is a good option.

Alternatively, using 2 x 3m Square Shade Sails side by side could work.

There is also shade cloth which can be cut to size, but the edges are not hemmed with eyelets to mount between posts so it would need to be attached to the structure in a way that will not affect the structure's integrity.

Let me know what you think and if you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Re: Shade sail

The shade sail would sit under the 6 x 3 pergola. The panels the pergola came with are too hot in summer. So it would be anchored to all 4 corners

Re: Shade sail

Hi @suset,

You'll have to start by confirming that the manufacturer of the pergola is comfortable with mounting a shade sail to the posts. I know it seems overkill, but these kinds of structures are engineered to specific standards and tolerances, so any inclusions or alterations to the structure can affect this. It's always better to be safe than sorry and a quick phone call to discuss is certainly worthwhile.

The 5x3 rectangular shade sail would be a good option, but there would be some small gaps at either end. If this is suitable, I'd suggest speaking with the manufacturer of the pergola about a mounting method that they are comfortable with.

An eye bolt through the posts could be an option, but you would need to confirm with the manufacturer of the pergola. Mounting to the house side of the pergola would require something like an eye plate to be installed to the house to attach the shade sail to.

Alternatively, using shade cloth screwed to the underside of the pergola will allow you to cover the entire area and have many more attachment points to keep it taut and secure. Once again, you would need to confirm suitability with the pergola's manufacturer, but this might be a good option for you.

Let me know what you think.

Jacob
