Hi
This is my very first DIY project!
I recently sanded my timber deck and applied a water-based timber finish, but I’m not happy with the result. I’d like to switch to an oil-based finish. Do I need to sand the deck again before applying the new finish?
Thanks in advance
Vani
Hi @VaniV,
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. We're pleased to have you join us and trust you'll get loads of help and inspiration for all your home improvement projects from our wonderful members.
Can you please tell us what product you have applied on your decking boards and how many coats? You might also like to share some photos so members can see what you are working with and suggest the best course of action.
Generally it is not a good idea to mix products as you can get unpredictable results.
Thanks,
Jason

Hi @VaniV,
Thank you for the additional details.
Unfortunately, you're going to have to sand the deck back to remove the stain.
You can use this Orbital Floor Sander to speed up the process. They can be hired through your local Bunnings' Hire Shop, but it is worth phoning ahead to reserve them as they can be popular around this time of year.
You might like to check out How To Sand A Deck for some guidance.
Let me know if you have any further questions.
