How to stop deck nails popping up?

Hi I have a large deck that some nails are popping. Looking on advice on replacing the popped nails with screws. What do you think looks good and last.

The nails are 50mm long and about 2.5mm in width.

The deck is hardwood about 10yrs old. No rot, but needs a repaint.

Re: deck nails popping up

Hi  @oldfox

You  are 100%  right simply pull up the loose board  nails. with claw hammer or  wrecking  bar  and use the same  holes and  replace them with deck screws that can  be Stainless steel or  gavanised and also   just makes sure they are 50mm long as a guide.

A bunch  of  decking screw options at bunnings.

Take a walk on the   wild side and use black  decking screws (but you might have to do the whole  deck  then.)

So no need to go longer with the screws then?

Re: deck nails popping up

Hi @oldfox

If the screws bite and hold in the nail  hole and they all should then your golden.

If on the odd chance a  screw  wont hold then I might would use a longer standard wood screw probaly 75mm is  next size up especially if  two screws on the same end of one  plank are loose.

Or

Altternativly put some aquadre glue down the nail hole or wipe some builders   glue liquid nails onto the screw shaft and weight the board on single  holes.

Just thought I'd add that nails popping up is a common experience from the small movement of your decking boards over time. I simply use a nail punch to tap them down again.
