How to replace gate hinges?

Hi, my rusty metal gate hinge fell off this morning.

the gate hinge was attached to a metal gate frame - welded top and bolted bottom.

the frame hinge was attached to a wooden fence post.

is there an easy way to do this?

Re: How to replace gate hinges?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @snail. It's sensational to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about replacing gate hinges.

It looks like you've got a bit of a custom installation on your hands, and the issue with the hinge is likely due to the bottom hinge being installed upside down, which would have prevented it from properly supporting the weight of the gate. This could be the reason the top hinge failed. To fix this, I recommend replacing both hinges with two new Pinnacle 16mm Galvanised LH Double Butt Security Gate Hinges. These are durable and should handle the weight of the gate well.

Make sure that when installing the new hinges, the pin section of the hinge should be facing upwards on both hinges, while the gate side of the hinge should be dropped down onto them. Given that the frame is quite thin, you’ll want to ensure at least two screws are driven in securely to hold the hinges in place.

The previous installer likely ran into similar issues and resorted to welding the top hinge. If you're unable to properly attach the new hinge with screws, you might want to consider welding them or, alternatively, using stronger bolts for a more secure fit. Be sure to check that the frame and post are level before attaching the new hinges, as this will help prevent any additional strain on the hinges over time.

If you’re unsure about how to securely attach them, it might be worth consulting with a professional to ensure the gate will be safe and functional long-term.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: How to replace gate hinges?

Thank you for your response. If my bc won't fix it I will have to find a tradesman. My drill wasn't strong enough to unscrew the broken hinge.

You might like to enlist a tradesperson on sites like Hipages or Airtasker, @snail
