How to repair garage concrete rebated edge?

The slab of my garage has a rebated edge that is the same height as a concrete driveway. Somehow it has chipped away over time.

Whats the best way to repair it.

I searched and have come up with 2 products

https://www.bunnings.com.au/earl-s-1kg-concremate-expanding-cement_p0960537

https://www.bunnings.com.au/gripset-betta-1l-concrete-crack-filler_p0960222

Im leaning towards the earls concremate. With the addition of a concrete edger like this one

Just thought id get some advice before i do anything. Incase i'm missing something.

Re: Repair garage concrete rebated edge

Hi @joshy1

Your reserching and thinking all the right things if I could add to your thoughts,

Tip " spritz the concrete your repairing first so its wet not  running. You may need to do this twice a concrete dries fast some times.

A )  If  you are  thinking about using an edger it  suggests to me you just want fill the damaged concrete egde and smooth it to match you existing concrete shapes and not fill the  entire crack to flat and smooth ?  If this is so  ordinary sand and cement mix  will work  as the { earls"wants to expand and may change shape and  size after you fill the holes. ) To save you buying a whole trowel for a  small repair you can  use a small trowel or if its just that one small repair use a  butter  knife to shape the concrete. But  for a  big area get the trowel  to do a better faster  job.

Australian Builders 20kg Sand And Cement Mix Bag  at $10.07

B)   If you want to seal those two slabs together I would use Sika Pro Plus in a chaking tube it is an elastic 20%  polymere from  memory and will expand and move with the 2 slabs.  If you use a cement product here it may re crack as  cement repairs have little flex in them.  apply to bone dry cement.

C)  You can fully seal over the join marks so its flat  using your researched ideas as long as the slabs stopped moving  or  you dont mind future cracks possibly.

D )  It might suit you to fill that groove full all the way along  and flat so then use small steel trowel flat.  With any of the fill materials  mentioned  and or use sand cement pre mix.

Enjoy your  project.

Re: How to repair garage concrete rebated edge?

Hi @joshy1,

I'd be using something a little stronger than sand and cement mix to repair the corner. If concrete with aggregate in it has chipped away then I feel sand and cement would too, rather quickly.

To clarify on the "expanding" part of Earl's 1kg Concremate Expanding Cement, contrary to the name, it doesn't actually expand; it just doesn't shrink whilst curing like other types of cement, so it's perfect for retaining the exact form you place it in. This is the product that I'd recommend.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Mitchell
