I’m looking for some advice on how to repair my front door steps
any help would be appreciated
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @sarah_22. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about repairing a step.
To repair your front door steps, especially given that a large corner piece has broken away, a simple glue fix likely won’t hold well enough. Since glue alone wouldn’t provide the necessary strength, a more durable solution involves reinforcing the broken section with reo (reinforcing) bar. Start by drilling holes into the remaining concrete and the brickwork below it, and then insert lengths of reo bar into these holes to form a solid anchor. This way, the corner will have extra support connecting it to the surrounding structure, making it more secure than the original concrete join.
With the reo bar in place, you can apply a high-strength patching cement to reform the damaged corner. The patching cement will fill in around the reo bar and bond with the remaining concrete, creating a robust and stable repair. This approach, while more involved, ensures the corner piece will hold up better over time by adding essential support from both the brickwork and the reo bar.
The other option would be to replace the two step treads entirely with new concrete treads. This might be a good option, especially considering the steps look quite old and this issue of the overhang breaking off could continue.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
