How to repaint rusted metal?

Hi all, the paint on the umbrella stand has flaked off and it looks pretty worse for wear. I’m going to guess this will need to be spray painted but any tips to prep the metal or products to use? Thanks!

Hi @corky55,

I'd hit it with some 120-grit sandpaper to remove the surface rust. You can then prime the whole base with primer and then a topcoat. You could go to the effort of spot-treating the rusted area with a rust converter before priming, though if you remove the majority of the rust with the sandpaper, then it's likely not required.
