Hi all,
can I save this cast iron bbq? I think it may be rust?
thanks in advance
Hi @Coco_M,
Thank you for your question about your cast iron BBQ.
I'm happy to say you can definitely save your rusted cast iron BBQ.
Start by scrubbing off the rust with a wire brush or steel wool. For tougher spots, apply a bit of vinegar to the rusted areas, let it sit for five to ten minutes, and scrub again. The vinegar will help to break down the rust, making it easier to remove.
After you've removed as much rust as possible, wash the cast iron thoroughly with warm water and a mild detergent. Use a non-abrasive sponge to get rid of any remaining residue. Rinse it well to remove all traces of soap and vinegar, then dry it completely to avoid further rusting.
Next, rub a thin layer of vegetable oil or food-safe mineral oil over the entire grill plate. Heat the BBQ to about 250–300°C for one to two hours to let the oil penetrate the surface, creating a protective layer. This process is called seasoning.
When oil is applied to the cast iron and heated past its smoke point, it undergoes a chemical change called polymerization. During polymerization, the oil molecules bond together and to the surface of the cast iron, forming a hard, slick layer. The more this process is repeated, the more layers of polymerized oil build up on the cast iron. Over time, these layers strengthen, making the surface smoother and more resistant to sticking. Properly seasoned cast iron will have a blackened, glossy appearance and can be maintained by periodically applying a thin layer of oil and heating it, either after each use or whenever the surface appears dull.
Following these steps should restore your BBQ to good condition and protect it for the future.
Let me know if you have any further questions.
