How to remove peeling paint from exterior brick wall?

Hi, we bought this house with whole exterior bricks has been painted but it is starting to peel off. What’s the best way to remove the paint? is it possible to do wall cladding over it?

Working out why the paint is peeling should be our first step. There is no point in repainting the bricks if there is an underlying issue that has not been addressed.

Is this an isolated patch where the paint is peeling? Or are there other areas where the paint is peeling?

Have you had any issues with dampness in the walls? Does the brick that has very little white on it feel damp?

It looks like the brick may have been limewashed before it was painted. Is the white stuff on the bricks powdery?

If the issue is isolated and we can confidently say whatever caused the peeling has been handled, there's no need to remove the existing paint. You could simply repaint the section of paint that has peeled off with a suitable colour-matched exterior paint such as Dulux Weathershield or Taubmans Sunproof.

Regarding the cladding question — yes, it is possible to install cladding over the painted brick, but there are a few important considerations. To do this properly, you'll typically need to attach timber battens to the existing brick wall. These battens create a gap between the brick and the cladding, which is crucial for airflow and moisture control. Further details will be available in the installation guide of the cladding that you choose.

The air gap helps to prevent any trapped moisture, which could lead to issues like mould or deterioration of the cladding or underlying wall. You’ll want to ensure that the battens are securely fixed and that there’s enough space for proper ventilation. If you’re in a climate with high humidity or rainfall you might need to also use a vapour barrier.

The brick wall was painted over 10 years ago. I think the peeling was due to age and poorly done. Most of the lower part of the external wall of the house paint is peeling.

Hello @mej711antones 

Have you considered using a wire wheel to totally strip the wall of paint? Just be aware that excessive use will damage the surface of the brick especially if you stay in one spot too long. The steel bristles will start eating into the surface of the brick and ruin its finish. Your goal is to just strip the surface of paint and move on.

In regards to wall cladding, I would go with the recommendations made by Jacob and Mitch.
