Hi all,
Looking to upgrade our pool area.
See below photos of current state.
Steps that I am considering are as follows:
1. Install cement sheeting to existing post and rail fence.
2. Limewash cement sheeting.
3. Pour concrete or build brick or besser block bench on the short end of the pool which will turn into a garden bed along the long side of the pool.
4. Finish the bench and garden bed in lime plaster.
5. Epoxy the concrete paths surrounding the pool in a light colour.
I welcome any advice, suggestions on installation and materials, tools and products and any alternative recommendations.
Regards,
Sam
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @AllTheGear. It's sensational to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about creating a Mediterranian-inspired pool area.
Upgrading your pool area to achieve a Mediterranean-inspired look is a fantastic idea. When it comes to attaching cement sheeting to your post and rail fence, it’s important to note that James Hardie products aren’t designed for fences. You’d need to construct a separate frame in front of the fence to support the weight of the sheeting and adhere to its installation requirements. Adding weight directly onto the fence also isn’t a good idea, as most fences aren’t built to handle it. Ensure your frame is sturdy and capable of bearing the load over time.
Using Dulux texture coats might be a better option than traditional limewashing to achieve that classic Mediterranean aesthetic. These texture coats can provide the same beautiful, soft finish, but with more durability and modern technology behind them. They also offer better adhesion and longevity compared to limewash, especially in outdoor environments. Just like with limewash, you'll want to ensure the cement sheeting is properly cleaned and primed beforehand to get the best result and ensure the finish lasts.
If you're building a bench along the pool that extends into a garden bed, whether it's concrete, brick, or besser blocks, your material choice depends on the look and durability you want. Concrete gives a modern feel, while bricks or besser blocks will bring out a more traditional, rustic vibe. Once built, you can finish both the bench and garden bed with render to enhance that Mediterranean style. Don’t forget to seal the render afterwards to protect it from moisture and wear, especially with it being poolside.
For the concrete paths, using exterior concrete paint would be a solid choice. Ensure the concrete is thoroughly cleaned and any cracks are dealt with before applying the paint, so you get a smooth and durable finish.
Lastly, if you're including a garden bed along the pool, proper drainage is key. Pool areas can be prone to excess water, so consider installing a gravel base or adding drainpipes to manage water flow and prevent water logging or plant issues.
