How to paint wooden posts and aluminium guttering?

What are your suggestions for restoring the paint on wooden posts and aluminium gutters?

The paint is very worn out and coming off a few areas.

1. Do I need to sand, prime and then paint? or is there another approach that will work better?

2. Which paint/material should I use?

Re: How to paint wooden posts and aluminium guttering?

Hi @sandeeps,

For the areas of timberwork where the paint is still in good condition, you can clean it down with Sugar Soap and a stiff bristle brush. After the areas have dried, you'll be able to paint over them with a self-priming exterior paint like Dulux Weathershield. This paint is also suitable for previously un-painted timbers.

For the areas where the paint is worn out, you'll need to sand until you reach solid paint or timber, repair any damage and then paint over it.

I'd presume the aluminium gutters have some gloss paint on them. For your new paint to bind to the old, you'll need to sand the surface with 180 grit sandpaper lightly. This scratches it and keys the surface allowing your new paint something to bite onto. If the gutter had been previously painted with low-sheen exterior paint and it's still in good condition, no sanding is needed, just a clean.

If you can provide additional images of the concerning areas, I can provide further information on the required repairs.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: How to paint wooden posts and aluminium guttering?

@MitchellMc Can you please suggest a list of materials for this? I hope to find time over the next week and get this done.

Some things that I think I need are:

1. Paint - How do I determine how much do I need?

2. Sanding paper

3. Wood fillers

4. Masking tape - to mask off any areas in close proximity

5. Covering sheets - to cover the floor. Where do I find these?

6. Brush(es)

Anything else?

Re: How to paint wooden posts and aluminium guttering?

Hello @sandeeps

I suggest looking at exterior paint such as Dulux Weathersheild make sure to choose a colour and show it to the paint specialist at the store and they will prepare the paint for you. I recommend starting with a 4-litre can, on average one litre of paint will cover approximately 14 square meters. From this first can, you'll be able to judge the area it will cover. If you need more you'll be able to say if you only need another 4 or just 2 litres.

For the sandpaper, I suggest getting 240 grit for the wood but 180 grit for the aluminium gutter, just remember that if it has been previously painted with low-sheen exterior paint and it's still in good condition, no sanding is needed, just a clean. There are many colours available for wood filling just make sure that it is rated for exterior use. The masking tape you have time limits on them on how long you can keep it attached to the surface of your wall so make sure to read the label.

The cover sheets are in the paint department as well, in regards to the paintbrush, I recommend Paint Partner 4 Piece Paint Brush Set.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Eric
