How to paint metal verandah posts?

Part 2 of my verandah painting questions.

I have gal verandah posts with peeling paint. How do I get rid of the paint without messing with the gal finish? I’m sure some of it will come off with a plastic scraper but probably not all.
Do I need to prime after?
