Re: painting aluminum

Hi @Jeanagh,

Are your aluminium window frames bare, or are they already painted? The process can differ depending on whether you’re coating bare aluminium or repainting existing painted frames.

If your frames are bare aluminium, you'll need to start by applying an etch primer. Etch primer is designed specifically for use on metals like aluminium and helps the paint adhere better by etching into the surface. After the primer has dried, you can apply an enamel paint, which provides a durable finish for outdoor conditions. Be sure to choose a paint that’s suitable for metal surfaces and outdoor use to ensure longevity and resistance to the elements.

If your frames are already painted, the first step is to thoroughly clean them to remove any dirt, grease, or grime. You can use a mild detergent and water for this. Once they are clean, lightly sand the existing paint with fine-grit sandpaper to "key" the surface. This will help the new paint stick to the old layer more effectively. After sanding, clean the surface again to remove any dust, and then you can apply your enamel paint over the top.

In both cases, make sure to use quality enamel paint, as this will ensure a smooth, lasting finish. You might also want to use painters’ tape to mask off areas you don’t want to paint, like the glass or surrounding walls. A spray can can provide a smoother finish, but a brush or roller will work too, depending on your preference and the texture you’re going for.

Once the paint is applied, allow it to cure fully before touching or cleaning the frames.

Re: painting aluminum

Hi @Jeanagh,

Then, it would be best to use the etch primer before the topcoat.
