How to line a wooden planter?

I bought this planter at Bunnings. It doesn’t have a base, wifey wants to place it under the pergola ( decking flooring) .

My question is how do I line it so that plants will have enough drainage and also the wooden deck doesn’t get damaged?

- Some kind of tray?

- Build a  wooden base?

- Line it with just plastic but then what about drainage and then I won’t be able to move the planter?

Looking for ideas. Thanks!

Re: How to line a wooden planter?

Hello @greg_r

Thank you for sharing your question about your wooden planter. I suggest doing all of the three things you've listed in regards to the wooden planter. I recommend building a Merbau base at the bottom of the planter, next, cover it with plastic and drill some drain holes through it. This is to allow water to go past the plastic and prevent your plant from becoming waterlogged. I then suggest building a catch tray that's also lined with builder's plastic.

This will catch all the overflow from the planter. This will also protect the deck from the water of the planter. I suggest adding a plastic clear drainpipe to the drain tray you are about to build. This will direct all the water it catches away from your deck.

Let me call on our experienced members @Dave-1 and @Nailbag for their recommendations.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.
