How to lay pavers at side of house?

Hi.

Im looking to extend my outdoor area.

Now, the sides of the house are all sand or crushed stones and im wanting to change that.

My plan was to tackle the area next to the verandah where I'll be spending most of my time at. I've done heaps of research and have a rather good understanding on how to lay pavers. But I have some questions.

1. Should I lay the pavers at the foundation level of the house?

2. Attached photos shows the level of the concrete under the verandah, and I was wondering if I should match up the levels of the pavers to the concrete.

3. As you can see the weepholes are on the 2nd brick and the waterproofing membrane is on top of the 1st brick layer.

Should I start my paving below the waterproofing membrane? If yes, how low below it should I go?

The pavers will be laid to a width of 2m which means it'll pass the edging as you can see in the photos and beyond the grass areas. The grass will be excavated as well.

Thank you

Re: Pavers side of house.

Hi @NorIlyanaK,

Thank you for your questions about installing a paved pathway at your home.

The main things to consider are the height of the damp course and the weep holes. As they are above the line of the concrete slab, as long as your pathway gently slopes away from the house, then having it at the height of the patio slab will be fine. This will give you a nice seamless transition between the paved path and the concrete slab.

As an added measure, you might consider adding a drainage channel along the line of the wall to prevent any water from accumulating against it. You could have it slope towards and connect to the downpipe to manage any water that falls in this area.

Let me know what you think and if you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Re: Pavers side of house.

Hi Jacob,

Thank you for the recommendation. Would I be needing a professional tradie to help connect the drainage channel to the downpipe?

And also if I choose to do away with the drainage channel, is there a sealant or filler that'll need to be applied between pavers and bricks?

Re: Pavers side of house.

Main reason for asking is because the area im in have not seen a heavy torrential downpour and no drainage issue as far as I can see.

Located Bendigo Victoria.

Re: Pavers side of house.

Hi @NorIlyanaK,

If there haven't been any drainage issues up to this point, you'd more than likely be fine. Just make sure there is a slight slope away from the house.

If you wanted to add the drainage anyway, you would need to have a plumber connect the drainage to the stormwater pipe.

To seal the pavers against the wall, you can use the same products and techniques shown in How to fill a joint in a concrete slab. This will create a watertight seal against the house that will allow for slight movement.

Let me know if you have any further questions.
