How to landscape a sloping backyard of 200 sq metres?

I am seeking some advice about the type of material to use that would act as drainage and control the grass and weeds.  I don't want it to end up in the street.  Could you suggest something that is cost-effective and practical.   I plan to have a lawn on the upper level, a retaining wall and a children's play area/entertaining area on the lower level.

Now my first question is there a chance that you could show us a few pics to get an understanding of what you have and want to do?

I love gabion walls as retaining walls and even free standing gabion walls. I find they are cost effective and practicle however before I recommend them I will wait until I see what you mean about weeds and the levels you are refering to. (If you search for Gabion Walls in the search Bar you will find a few examples of what can be done or click on my name and you will see the ones I have put in)

Allow me to welcome you as well to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's marvellous to have you join us and thanks for sharing your question about landscaping your sloping backyard.

A picture of the area would really help our members assess the area. Can you also please include the size of the backyard? It's prudent to have a drain when building a retaining wall. This will prevent the soil from going soft and the wall tilting forward. The water has to be technically diverted to the street drain, so it has to be linked to your existing storm drain.

Your proposed ideas can definitely be achieved on the condition that there is enough space and safety issues are addressed.
