How to insulate patio roof?

I’m looking at budget friendly ways of insulating my patio roof as the heat in summer kills through it.

I'd recommend you take a look at this discussion: How to insulate a metal roof by @bowmatty. Although their reason for insulating was to prevent condensation, their method is also applicable to prevent heat transfer. Installing Foilboard is a fast and effective way to easily insulate a roof and will make a significant difference to your patio area. Alternatively, as you have the depth of your beams to work with, you could use traditional Earthwool insulation and clad over it with plasterboard.
