How to install a privacy screen?

Hi,

I am looking to install a privacy screen to block out the neighbours view of our decking. I’m looking to build something custom that includes timber or possibly colour bond (or both), and planning on putting some garden beds in front of it and maybe grow climbers.

What is the best way to do this, should I extend it from the existing structure to create a half screen, or remove the decking wire and build it from the ground up? Also after any creative suggestions on the design. Thank you 😀

Re: How to install a privacy screen?

Hi @BigBuilder,

Building the screen in front of the existing railing would be the easiest and most stable option. You can fix it securely into the deck joists at the base and into the handrail for extra support. If you try to extend it from the top of the handrail, you’ll only have one mounting point, which makes it trickier to secure properly.

For screening options, Bunnings has a wide range of panels that can give you instant privacy, whether you prefer timber, plastic, or a combination of both. If you’re keen on using planters and climbers, it’ll take a bit longer for the plants to establish, but a trellis would work well to support their growth. I've added a rendering I created for you below.

It's important to bear in mind that you shouldn't add planters where they can be used to elevate a child's position, assisting them in climbing over the balcony.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell
