How to fix gutter leaking water into roof space?

Hi valuable community members,

I have started to notice that during heavy rains , just like the one we had this weekend in Melbourne  we have 2 issues:

1. Gutters overflow towards the fascia and water enters the roof space with drop leaks in the bedroom ceiling.

I got up the roof and can see that this is caused due to the non alignment (proper pitch) of the new gutter section with the old section. I can see that there is downpipe just near to the start of the new section. But water pools and overflows in the older section just 1 away from the downpipe. Can I adjust the pitch somehow without removing the guttering ? Or can I install some sort of back strip so that the water just flows towards the downpipe which is just a meter away?  Or please propose a solution that works!

2. Water also enters the eves and between the gutters from the chimney area.

I noticed that the flashing around the chimney needs to be reinstalled and also. Please suggest what to buy and how do I install it.

Thanks heaps. Appreciate your help.

Regards

Nathan

Re: How to fix gutter leaking water into roof space?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Nitinbala. It's amazing to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about repairing guttering.

This issue with your gutters can cause significant damage if not addressed promptly, so it’s important to act quickly. Given the potential for expensive damage to your roof and ceiling, I would strongly recommend contacting a professional guttering service. A professional will be able to remove the section of gutter, adjust the pitch, and reinstall it correctly so that water flows properly into the downpipe. It’s not likely that you can correct the pitch of the gutter without removing it and reinstalling it at the correct angle.

Regarding the flashing around the chimney, if it’s not sealed properly, water can enter between the gutter and the roof, causing additional leaks. To fix this, you’ll need to purchase flashing or a sealant designed for roof areas around chimneys. If you’re comfortable with D.I.Y., you could install the new flashing, but again, it might be worth considering a professional to ensure it's done correctly.

It’s best to have both these issues addressed as soon as possible to avoid further damage to your home.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell
