Hi,
Thank you for the opportunity to ask this question!
I’m looking for advice on how to fix a decking stain problem. I have a merbau deck that was finished in UltraDeck stain. I asked painter to give a new coat however, he mistakingly used UltraDeck oil.
The finish is unsatisfactory as the decking is a bit old and really needs the opaque finish of the stain product. At the moment it looks dull and patchy. To avoid stripping it back, I’m wondering if anyone makes a decking stain that could be applied successfully over what I have. I would be grateful for advice.
Thank you
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @deniseg78. It's fantastic to have you join us and many thanks for your question on deck stains.
I'm sorry to hear of your experience.
After speaking with Intergrain their advice is that the products need to be sanded off the deck to establish a uniform surface for re-application. These water-based products are film-building. So, you have the original product on the deck, we've just added another layer on top of that, and by the time you add a third, the three layers will likely fail. I'm not aware of any product designed to go over an oil that will fix the situation and eliminate the patchy issue.
Here are a couple of helpful guides: How to sand a deck and How to stain a deck.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
