My clothes line is fairly old and is not stay up anymore I want to know what I could do to keep it from falling down, any weight put onto it. It collapses

It sounds like the locking mechanism in the arms of your clothesline has worn out or failed. If you can identify the make and model, you might be able to source replacement parts. However, if that’s not possible, there are a couple of potential fixes.
One option is to permanently secure the arms in the extended position. You could install an angle bracket beneath each arm, with one side screwed into the post and the other supporting the arm. I've created a rendering below to show placement. Alternatively, if there’s a locking pin or latch that has worn down, you might be able to reinforce it with a bolt or a similar sturdy fastener.
If the clothesline is quite old and beyond repair, replacing it might be the most reliable solution. Let me know if you need help selecting a new one.

As per @MitchellMc 's thoughts above. If no spare parts - drill through the lower expanding bar just ahead of the plastic insert to accommodate a spring-loaded locking pin.
That way you can lower the clothesline afterwards.
